How to Use Your Menstrual Disc or Cup

How to use your Menstrual Disc

  • Wash your hands and make sure the disc is clean.
  • With your fingers pinch the rim together in the middle of the disc to form an eight.
  • Use a position that is comfortable for you, either sitting on the toilet, squatting, one leg up or in the shower. Insert the disc like a tampon with the ring facing down. (This will be the last part to enter your vagina)
  • Slide the disc into your vagina pointing down until it is completely inside. You want it to sit at a vertical angle so it completely covers your cervix. Make sure you push it past the pubic bone as far as it can go so the rim tucks in just above the bone. This may take a couple of tries but you will get there.
  • To remove the disc, hook the ring with your finger or thumb. Slowly and gently remove the disc. Try to keep it horizontal to avoid spillage and empty into the toilet bowl/shower. Rinse and reinsert.

How to use your Menstrual Cup

  • Wash your hands.
  • Make sure the cup is clean before use.
  • Fold the cup. Experiment with each fold to see which option is better for you.
  • Below you can see the 2 most popular folds, the C-Fold, followed by the  Punchdown Fold.

  • To insert the cup use a position that is comfortable for you – sitting on the toilet, standing with one leg up or squatting. Insert the cup into your vagina like you would a tampon without an applicator. The cup should be fully inside your vagina.  It should sit a few centimeters below your cervix. Once the cup is in your vagina, rotate it. This creates the suction that holds it in place. Remember this may take a few tries until you get it right. The more you relax the easier it will be.
  • The cup can be used up to 12 hours depending on your flow.
  • To remove the cup, first wash your hands. Again you can sit on the toilet, stand with one leg up or squat. Relax, this will make it easier to remove the cup.
  • Use the stem as a guide to feel the base of the cup. Break the seal by gently pinching the base of the cup with your thumb and index finger and pull the cup down slowly and remove .You can also use the stem to help you remove the cup once the suction is broken. If this method doesn't break the suction, try sliding one finger up the side of the cup to break the seal and remove as above.
  • Carefully pull the cup out and empty it into the toilet.
  • Clean your cup to use again or to store for your next period.
